If you can reclaim income tax if you overpay. You can either reclaim the overpayment through your Personal Tax Account, or by sending an R38 form to HMRC.
It is possible to overpay income tax, especially if you work for more than one employer, or for yourself.
HMRC checks every taxpayer’s record at the end of each tax year. For most people, this tax-checking process is fairly straightforward. They have a single employer who operates a tax code against their income, and sends any deductions to HMRC.
Having several jobs, drawing a pension whilst working, or having taxable benefits as part of your tax code complicates things. Mistakes do happen, so always check your P60 from each employer, to make sure they pay your tax correctly.
It’s also worth checking your Personal Tax Account to see the ‘big picture’, rather than a single employer.
You can reclaim overpaid income tax using an R38 form or you may be able to claim online.
You’ll need to provide your personal details, as well as details of the overpayment so that HMRC can look into it.
If you think that your employer has deducted too much income tax from you, you might also need them to contact HMRC to confirm the correct amount.
