If you are an employee or director of a company and have to wear a uniform, you may be able to claim tax relief.

However, you must have paid for the uniform, rather than your employer. If your employer has provided you with a uniform, you may be able to claim tax relief for the laundering of the uniform provided you meet specified requirements.

The uniform must be necessary for you to do your job and should also bear the company logo. A uniform which could be classed as general clothing, like plain black trousers and a white shirt without any logo could be worn in any situation and wouldn’t be regarded as a uniform by HM Revenue & Customs. If you are obliged to pay for protective clothing and have responsibility for repairing, replacing and cleaning it, you may be eligible for tax relief. However, the initial outlay isn’t allowable. The uniform must be recognisable for a certain type of job, like a nurse or police uniform.

Rather than keep paperwork detailing the costs of separate items, you may want to claim a Flat Rate Expense which covers the annual cost of replacing and laundering a uniform. The amount allowed is added to your personal allowances and is shown in your tax code. There are varying amounts which may be claimed dependent on the type of trade. The amounts have been agreed between HMRC and trade unions and other relevant bodies. To claim the expense, HMRC will want to know your employer details, the type of trade, whether the uniform has a logo and whether your employer provides a laundry or reimburses you for the cost of cleaning your uniform.
