Staff Spotlight: Henry Pugh, Sales Manager

We chat to Henry Pugh, who explains his role as the Sales Manager here at The Accountancy Partnership.

Give an overview of the duties, functions, and responsibilities of your job.

My role revolves around ensuring the sales department is running smoothly, dealing with colleague and client enquiries, forecasting and target setting, meeting with external partners, and reporting to the Directors.

What is a typical working day like for you?

No two days are the same. I usually check my emails before coming into the office, so I know how best to structure my day. Even though there will be the occasional curve ball, it allows me to know what else I need to do during the day.

What particular challenges do you regularly encounter?

The ever-changing nature of business ideas means that even after working at TAP for 8 years, I am still coming across new ways to make money. Sometimes HMRC haven’t released guidance on the tax treatment of this income, and it becomes a minefield. Crypto and NFTs are the most recent examples of this.

What are some of the biggest challenges faced by your clients?

There is so much conflicting advice on the internet, that it becomes difficult for our clients to know what they have to do. It is our job to ensure that the information is delivered in a clear and concise way to reassure clients that their business is in good hands.

How are you able to use your skills to solve problems for them?

As a manager, my role revolves around supporting my team when they are corresponding with potential clients. Having worked in finance since 2007 I hope I am able to answer some of the queries that my team come up against, but I do rely on an amazing team of accountants, admin, payroll, and bookkeeping staff around me to be able to do my job.

What is your favourite part of the job?

The fact that every day is different, and I can be working on staff reviews one minute and speaking with clients the next. It makes each day so much more interesting.

What do you like most about working for The Accountancy Partnership?

The Sales team I have around me and the TAP staff in general. The Sales team spend so much time together that it would make it so difficult if we didn’t all get on. I know I can rely on my team when I am busy, and they always make me smile when I need it.

What skills do you find most useful to do your job?

Being able to talk with people is really important. A large part of the role is about listening and making sure I understand the client or staff members’ situation.

Where’s your favourite place to visit on days off?

Somewhere with my wife and children, the location doesn’t matter. I believe the most important thing in life is the people you spend it with.

Tell us about your proudest achievement.

My children – I am so proud of them and their achievements already, and can’t wait to see what their futures hold.

How would your colleagues describe you?

I dread to think.

What are you reading/binge watching at the moment?

I am a huge fan of the author Harlan Coben and I am currently reading one of his novels, “Home”. I am also reading ‘The Conquest of Gaul’ by Julius Caesar.

Who do you admire, and why?

I guess this will be the stock answer for a lot of people, but my parents. My mum and dad are the two people I look up to entirely, and I still consult them on even the most mundane things. Their work ethic, morals, and sense of family have given me an amazing start in life, and I feel extremely lucky to call them my parents.

What question would you really like to answer, and what’s the answer?!

When will Tranmere Rovers win the Premier League? The answer is 2029.
