Staff Spotlight: Adam Thompson, Accounts Semi Senior

This month we spoke to Adam Thompson, Accounts Semi Senior at The Accountancy Partnership!

Give an overview of the duties, functions and responsibilities of your job.

It’s my responsibility to produce my clients’ year-end accounts and ensure that they are accurate for submission to HMRC and Companies House. I also have to prepare and submit VAT returns, Self Assessments, other ad-hoc tasks and be able to answer any general queries from clients.

What is a typical working day like for you?

I usually start my day early in the gym and then make my way over to the office. My working day starts with any email queries and catching up on yesterday’s correspondence, as well as making any adjustments off the back of my queries being answered.

Lunchtime, few games of pool, then in the afternoon get stuck into some new accounts or pick up any that I started yesterday. This usually goes on past 5pm.

What particular challenges do you regularly encounter?

Tackling the latecomers that submit their records particularly close to their deadlines. No challenge is too big to be honest, and there is plenty of help available around with more experienced colleagues. As a collective, I doubt there is much that the team won’t know.

What are some of the biggest challenges faced by your clients?

Understanding their tax bill. Never seems to happen when they are due a refund, though…

How are you able to use your skills to solve problems for them?

I have a good sense of priorities, so I am usually able to get something done on time, even in a pinch if I’ve got one piece of work more urgent than another. I’m also a pretty good problem-solver, which comes in handy when things don’t balance or reconcile.

What is your favourite part of the job?

Finally getting to click ‘complete’ on a complex job that’s been driving me mad.

What do you like most about working for The Accountancy Partnership?

The people, place, company. Easily the best job I’ve ever had.

What skills do you find most useful to do your job?

Time management is probably the top one, along with problem solving. Also pretty important to be able to take a break from your desk, too. Pool skills help, too.

Where’s your favourite place to visit on days off?

Either Mum’s house for a roast or the zoo. Love a walk in the woods as well.

Tell us your proudest achievement?

Becoming a dad!

How would your colleagues describe you?

I get ‘laid back’ and ‘chilled out’ quite a lot. Happy with that, could be a lot worse.

What are you reading/binge watching at the moment?

Not much of a ‘binger’, I usually just stick something on before bed. It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is one of the go-to programmes. I’ve also been meaning to read The Silmarillion for about a year but it’s still in my drawer.

Who do you admire and why?

Mum. All the top quality parenting aside, I’m still waiting to be passed down ‘the secret of the roastie’. Speaking of amazing parenting, also my better half Chantelle, couldn’t ask for a better partner.

What question would you really like to answer, and what’s the answer?!

Squat, bench or deadlift?

Deadlift, surely.
