Hey Joe! Tell us about your business

I’m a freelance web developer based up in the North East of England building websites for small businesses of different shapes and sizes. I’m also working on some WordPress Plugins to help other digital agencies and some hosted services.

What drove you to start your business?

I want to be my own boss and someday work full time at Invisible Dragon so I can focus on my clients.

What particular challenges did you have to overcome in setting up your business, and since then?

Accounting and taxes are a lot harder than I expected. I wrongly assumed it was something I could manage myself, until the technical language involved was too much for me to manage. I found The Accountancy Partnership who helped sort things out.

Apart from that, getting my first few clients to trust me has been the hardest part. I’ve achieved this offline, mostly out of luck, whereas online your main choices are freelance websites where the competition is incredibly fierce.

Pandle being built by your in-house team meaning that you have technical people, and a custom solution. I previously worked at a small company who built custom accountancy software and being able to make changes which made a real difference I see reflected in Pandle. Also, the staff and the reminders to make sure I do the right things are really helpful.

Have we helped you overcome any challenges, and if so, how?

Getting my previous accounts in order when I really should have got them sorted sooner.

What do you have planned for your business in future?

Be able to help new clients to get online, or update their existing presence to a point where I can move towards Invisible Dragon full-time. Beyond that it’s getting my WordPress plugins polished and ready to sell, and actually finishing any other projects I have going on!
