This month we spoke to Josh Davies, Accounts Junior at The Accountancy Partnership!

Give an overview of the duties, functions and responsibilities of your job.

Preparing the annual accounts, VAT returns and Self Assessments for clients whilst supporting them with any queries they have regarding being as tax efficient as possible. Also providing support to clients using our software, Pandle.

What is a typical working day like for you?

I’d normally start with checking for any new emails received overnight then start on my accounts work. There can sometimes be client calls throughout the day, support calls/online chats regarding our software, Pandle, VAT returns and Self Assessments, depending on the time of the year.

What particular challenges do you regularly encounter?

The main challenge is varying client deadlines but as clients usually send their records well in advance, it can be managed.

What are some of the biggest challenges faced by your clients?

I think the main one I find would be HMRC requesting payments on account for next year’s Self Assessment tax. This can worry some clients as their tax bill is higher than the tax due for the financial year that we’ve processed for them.

What is your favourite part of the job?

Learning and fully understanding new areas of accounting is always beneficial but not always the easiest thing to do. When it all suddenly comes into place, it’s great!

What do you like most about working for The Accountancy Partnership?

Definitely my colleagues. Everyone here is a joy to work with and I look forward to being here for many years to come. The quarterly events are always fun too!

What skills do you find most useful to do your job?

I have a strong background in working with numbers which is beneficial. I believe my degree in Mathematics and 10 years of experience working in a payroll agency has prepared me for working as an accountant.

Where’s your favourite place to visit on days off?

I normally enjoy trying different restaurants around Liverpool/Wirral. Current favourites are Albert’s Schloss and Duke Street Market in Liverpool.

Tell us your proudest achievement?

Finally making my way to NYC for a solo trip in 2017. I basically did every touristy thing I could within a week. Still recovering now but I’d go back in a second!

How would your colleagues describe you?

“Relaxed, helpful, friendly and nice to be around”. That’s a direct quote from a colleague so I’ll go with that!

What are you reading/binge watching at the moment?

I’m normally in the middle of watching several different TV shows so currently, it’s the following: Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Taskmaster, For All Mankind, Modern Family, The Bear, Australian Survivor. There are lots on the list that I want to watch too! I’ve got a relatively decent home cinema set up so there’s quite a few movies on the list as well.

What question would you really like to answer, and what’s the answer?!

Should you still use physical media (DVD, Blu-ray etc) or streaming services? Physical media! It’s such better quality for both video and audio!
