A survey carried out by T-Mobile of 2,000 small business owners revealed that 35 percent of all businesses in the United Kingdom spend 45 minutes each day speaking to colleagues, business partners and customers, who don’t get straight to the point. This costs more than £36 million if worked out using the average hourly wage. T-Mobile carried out the survey to try and determine the methods of communication preferred in business and understand the pressures of time for many businesses.

Over 90 percent of business owners view themselves as people who are straight talkers and appreciate others being the same, especially when dealing with important matters as their accountancy firms. Almost three quarters of the business owners surveyed admitted they would stop listening after five minutes if the person didn’t get straight to the point. Ten percent would rather skip the small talk and polite conversation and get down to business immediately when in business meetings.

The overuse of clichés and jargon was cited as being an indication of a person who is not a straight talker, with the most disliked phrases used including “At the end of the day” and “out of the box”. Alex Polizzi, who appears on Channel 5, commented on the research saying:

“I’ve always advocated a straight talking approach in business and T-Mobile’s research shows just how much it matters to small business owners. It has nothing to do with being rude to people and everything to do with saving time and ultimately money.”

With this research showing that small businesses are focused on saving time, online accounting is one area where huge savings can be made, both with time and money. Outsourcing to a small business accountants removes the requirement for an in house manager, minimising all need for unnecessary communications.
