Not sure how to operate as a locum dentist?

Being a locum dentist describes the way you practice, but it's not a legal structure for tax purposes. It means that as well as maintaining your General Dental Council registration and arranging professional indemnity cover, you'll need to register your business with HMRC. Most practitioners choose between working as a sole trader or setting up a limited company.

Both have pros and cons depending on your circumstances, so deciding what suits you best can feel overwhelming! Our friendly team can talk you through all the options available, and what each one might mean for you. If you decide to incorporate a new limited company, we'll even set everything up for you with Companies House, saving you up to £120!

Moving to us from a new accountant

Moving all your records over to a new accountant can be a daunting prospect if you're not too sure what to look out for. We can do it for you!

We'll liaise with your old provider to make all the arrangements - a process known as professional clearance - and let HMRC know we're acting on your behalf whilst you get to know your new accountant.

What services do I need?

You'll need to submit a tax return no matter what type of business structure you register with HMRC. For instance, sole traders must send either a Self Assessment or MTD Income Tax return, but limited companies use Company Tax Returns. It's why your fee includes a complete set of financial accounts and the appropriate tax return as standard.

There are lots of other ways an accountant can support you, and not everyone needs the same services. Some will become VAT registered and want help with VAT returns, whereas someone running a company might look for guidance around director's payroll. If you'd like advice on choosing the right services for you, call our team on 020 3355 4047.

FAQs

Locum Dentist FAQs

Do you provide bookkeeping software to clients?

Yes, we do! As a client you'll have free unrestricted access to Pandle, although you're welcome to use any bookkeeping software you like. If you do use Pandle, our bookkeepers will carry out regular checks to make sure everything looks accurate, even if you're not subscribed to our bookkeeping service.

How often can I speak to my accountant?

You'll be able to contact your dedicated accountant whenever you need to, all as part of your fee.

What expenses can locum dentists claim?

You can usually claim any expense which relates wholly and exclusively to your business. For locum dentists and dental hygienists this could include anything from travel, to GDC fees and insurance.

Everyone's costs will look a little different, but your accountant will go through everything in detail and make sure you're claiming it all on your tax return!

Do I need to send a tax return if I'm a self-employed dentist?

Yes, if you decide to work as a self-employed locum dentist or another type of dental health professional, you'll need to send tax returns to tell HMRC about the money you earn. The type of tax return you need to send depends on how you register the business, but don't worry - your accountant will explain it all in detail!

You're in good hands

Our accountants have a wide range of qualifications and accreditations from trusted professional bodies such as the AAT, ICPA, and ACCA.

We charge a monthly fee based on your business type

Confirm Transactions

The number of monthly transactions you have entered based on your turnover seem high. A transaction is one bookkeeping entry such as a sale, purchase, payment or receipt. Are you sure this is correct?

Yes, submit my quote
No, let me change it

Please contact our sales team if you’re unsure

VAT Returns

It is unlikely you will need this service, unless you are voluntarily registered for VAT.

Are you sure this is correct?

Yes, the business is VAT registered
No, let me change it

Call us on 020 3355 4047 if you’re not sure.

MTD IT Quarterly Updates

Your final, end of year MTD Income Tax submission is included in your fee, without this add-on service.

We would recommend you submit the quarterly updates yourself using Pandle or alternative bookkeeping software.

However, if you would prefer us to submit these quarterly updates for you, there is an additional fee of £35.00 per month.
