Will I get a tax rebate?
A tax rebate is a refund or repayment of income tax you’ve overpaid to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). You might have paid too much tax as a result of PAYE income processed through the wrong tax code, starting or stopping work mid-year, or if you’re a subcontractor and you have had deductions made through the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).
Our tax rebate calculator will help you determine whether you’ve overpaid income tax throughout the tax year, and if you have, how much you’re owed.

How do I know if I’m owed a tax rebate?
If you normally use Self Assessment your overpayment will show as part of your tax calculation once you submit your return. You can also check by logging into your Personal Tax Account on GOV.UK, or by using a tax rebate calculator.
If you don’t normally send a tax return and HMRC find you’ve overpaid tax, you will receive a P800 tax calculation (also known as Simple Assessment) telling you how much you’re owed and how to get your tax rebate.
FAQs
A tax rebate is issued by HMRC to repay any tax you’ve overpaid during the tax year, for example through PAYE or because you’ve had CIS payments deducted.
There are lots of possible reasons, such as the wrong tax code being used on your wages, or a change in circumstances mid-year. It’s particularly common for people who work through the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).
An employer will normally factor in any tax-free allowances you get when working out how much tax to deduct, but this isn’t the case for subcontractors so it’s very common to pay more tax than you need to.
If HMRC issue a P800 or Simple Assessment you can usually claim it through your Personal Tax Account. Alternatively, if our tax rebate calculator indicates you’re owed a rebate, you can claim it online via GOV.UK, or check and claim a tax refund using the HMRC app.
If you normally submit a tax return anyway, you can claim it through that.
It depends on how you claim your tax rebate. The expected timeframe runs anywhere from 5 working days to 12 weeks.
Yes! You can claim a tax rebate for up to four years after the end of the tax year in which your overpayment occurred.
No! You can claim your refund directly from HMRC and you’ll receive 100% of the money you’re owed. A refund company will take a percentage of what’s yours.
In most cases, you will automatically get a refund if you’ve overpaid tax. HMRC should send you a P800 or Simple Assessment when they think you’ve overpaid.
This isn’t always the case though, and if your situation changes, for example you change jobs or move abroad, you may need to claim manually.
A tax rebate is not considered taxable income.
