An annual return is a snapshot of certain company information at a point in time. The annual return is submitted to Companies House, usually once per year and includes information such as who the directors are, who the shareholders are, the registered office address of the company and so on.

The annual return is not to be confused with annual accounts or a tax return.

Typically the first annual return will be due one year after the company incorporated (was formed). There is a 28 day time limit to complete the annual return, after which time Companies House will send out reminders and eventually attempt to strike the company off the register.

The annual return can be submitted to Companies House electronically through the Web filling system. A company’s accountant will typically file the annual return on its behalf.
