Our staff spotlight this month is Grace Paulson! Grace explains her role as an accountant here at The Accountancy Partnership.

What is your job title?

I’m an Accounts Senior.

Tell us about your role

I have my own portfolio of clients, made up of limited companies, LLP’s, sole traders and partnerships. It is my responsibility to prepare the accounts, tax and VAT returns for my clients.

What is a typical working day like for you?

I start my day by responding to e-mails followed by picking up a set of accounts. I often attend the office gym during my lunch hour, which breaks the day up nicely. I hold my initial consultations with new clients in the afternoon, followed by responding to client queries.

What particular challenges do you regularly encounter?

Changes in tax legislation. It’s been a particular challenge during the Covid-19 pandemic with so many new grants, VAT changes, and the furlough scheme. There are also additional VAT changes due to Brexit.

What are some of the biggest challenges faced by your clients?

Probably the recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. So many businesses have been affected and as we come out the other side, with the grants and furlough being phased out, it’s difficult seeing our clients struggle.

How are you able to use your skills to solve problems for clients?

I’m fully AAT qualified and have worked in practice for 7 years. I use the knowledge gained from my training as well as from the day-to-day experience of being an accountant. No day is the same and no business is the same, but thanks to my years in practice there aren’t many issues that I haven’t faced.

What is your favourite part of the job?

As we’re an online accountancy practice I deal with clients from all over the world, and work with a wide variety of businesses – it’s really interesting.

Grace's quote

What do you like most about working for The Accountancy Partnership?

The people! I work in a big vibrant office, everyone is so friendly. We get free lunches and smoothies twice a week too which is really great. Oh, and we have dogs in the office which is brilliant.

What skills do you find most useful to do your job?

I manage a large portfolio of clients, so organisational skills are a must to keep on top of the work and ensure deadlines aren’t missed.

Where’s your favourite place to visit on days off?

My husband and I have a really close-knit group of friends who we see most weekends. We all love hiking so it tends to be country/mountain walks, followed by a pint at a nearby pub. If we’re not walking, we’re snowboarding at The Chill Factore in Manchester.

I’m very close to my family, I see my Mum and my in-laws all the time. My three brothers are dotted around the country with their partners, so we have little trips away to visit them too.

Tell us about your proudest achievement.

Learning to snowboard. At first it was hard and scary, but I persevered. Snowboarding down a mountain is one of the best feelings in the world, and I feel proud every time I do it.

How would your colleagues describe you?

I would say that my colleagues would consider me to be friendly, happy and approachable. If anybody has a question or needs help, I’ll always be on hand to help them.

What are you reading/binge watching at the moment?

I’m currently reading ‘The Power of Now’ by Eckhart Tolle and I’ve just finished binge watching Squid Game.

Who do you admire, and why?

My auntie, Kirstie. She’s recently been diagnosed with stage 4 secondary breast cancer but has remained so positive. She is a ray of light and I admire her strength so much.

I also admire my husband, Nick. Nothing is ever too much trouble for him, he’s so kind and supportive and the funniest person I know.

What question would you really like to answer, and what’s the answer?!

Does cheese make every savoury item better? Yes!

There is no singular savoury item that is not made better with cheese. I have had this discussion with many people in the past, and I’ve ALWAYS been able to prove adding cheese is better (apart from my colleague Sam, who hates cheese. And vegans, they will disagree too.)
