We talk to Samantha about her role as Payroll Clerk at The Accountancy Partnership.
Give an overview of the duties, functions and responsibilities of your job.
Dealing with emails, answering calls, helping the clerks with payroll for their clients, applying to HMRC for PAYE references, and good old tax codes!
What is a typical working day like for you?
No day is ever the same, which is why I love it. It has to start with a very large cup of coffee and then it’s on to the emails and see where that takes me!
What particular challenges do you regularly encounter?
Explaining the weird and wonderful ways of how payroll, and especially HMRC, work to new businesses. A lot of new business owners have lots of different questions, which we always aim to help to the best that we can.
What are some of the biggest challenges faced by your clients?
Running payroll! I genuinely believe it’s underestimated by almost everyone. Each month people expect their wages to be in their bank, but the behind the scenes there is so much work which goes into sorting this out. I think comes as a big shock to most new employers.
How are you able to use your skills to solve problems for them?
I like to know I have done all that I can to help people, so when I explain how we run payroll and help employers set it up, that feels like a really good achievement.
What is your favourite part of the job?
Being part of an amazing payroll team, they really have been my rock over the last year, as have the whole of the TAP family.
What do you like most about working for The Accountancy Partnership?
I know it sounds cheesy, but I honestly have never worked for a company where the management have cared so much about their staff. They are very approachable and provide us with free lunches and outings. If you ever need anything there is always an open door and a sympathetic ear to listen.
What skills do you find most useful to do your job?
My stubbornness (which I am not admitting to being!). I don’t like giving up on a challenge, I like to get things completed or to find the answer if I can…. It could be argued that I always like to be proven right…
Where’s your favourite place to visit on days off?
The beach. We are so lucky to live on a peninsular, with so many beaches to visit.
Tell us about your proudest achievement.
Apart from having my 3 troublesome girls, my biggest achievement so far was having the strength (and support from family and TAP obviously) to keep myself going after losing my husband suddenly and unexpectantly in May 2020.
The payroll ladies, as I’ve said, have been my rock, and helped me in ways I’ll never be able to pay back. Being able to look forward to going into work has allowed me to slowly, but surely, reach a stage where I can begin to look to a future for me and my 3 little girls.
How would your colleagues describe you?
Stubborn (I’m not!), sarcastic but fun!
What are you reading/binge watching at the moment?
Sons of Anarchy, absolutely love it!
Who do you admire, and why?
My daughter Bella has been so strong and an amazing big sister to her younger sisters, even though they both ransack her room all the time!
What question would you really like to answer, and what’s the answer?!
If you could have one superpower, what would it be? To be able to hear people’s thoughts
