Rebecca Mercer tells us more about her role as a Payroll Clerk here at The Accountancy Partnership.

Give an overview of the duties, functions, and responsibilities of your job.

Providing an excellent service to all my clients! I ensure all payrolls, CIS and pensions are dealt with accurately, as well as responding to my clients in a timely manner with thorough detailed information, and meeting all deadlines.

What is a typical working day like for you?

My days always have a busy start, responding to client’s emails. Throughout the day I have multiple tasks to complete, from payrolls and CIS returns, through to pensions. I like to organise my work and complete every task thoroughly. I complete checks daily to ensure I am on top of my workload.

What particular challenges do you regularly encounter?

We have a lot of queries we rely on HMRC for, such as specified charges, or where HMRC hold data which does not match up with the data we hold. These can take a long period of time to rectify.

What are some of the biggest challenges faced by your clients?

Ensuring payroll is setup in time for their pay date. We could be waiting on previous accountants’ information, HMRC payroll reference numbers, employee details etc. before we can process their payroll.

How are you able to use your skills to solve problems for them?

Having 6 years payroll experience I’ve come across a lot of problems, so I have lots of experience to help clients deal with most issues that arise. These skills mean I can help clients thoroughly understand the process of payroll and the timescales involved. It’s reassuring for clients knowing that we can help.

What is your favourite part of the job?

I have always enjoyed talking directly with clients and helping them understand the process. Building a client relationship and starting to know them on an individual basis is a lovley part of my job.

What do you like most about working for The Accountancy Partnership?

The friendly atmosphere when I arrive at work. Everyone is so friendly and easy to talk to. Our payroll team are more than just colleagues, I would class them as friends too.

What skills do you find most useful to do your job?

I am a very empathetic person and can really understand clients worries and issues, and reassure them they are in good hands. Building client relationships is important to me, and it helps clients feel comfortable discussing their queries, and know I am always here to help, no matter the question or situation.

Where’s your favourite place to visit on days off?

I like to take our son to the park or woods, and explore everywhere. There is no better feeling than seeing a smile on his face having a lovely time.

Tell us about your proudest achievement.

Giving birth to my beautiful boy.

How would your colleagues describe you?

Polite, friendly, hardworking, just a nice person.

What are you reading/binge watching at the moment?

I like to watch YouTube regularly. I am currently watching Lydia Elise Millen and Gemma Louise Miles

Who do you admire, and why?

I have always admired my Nan. She would do anything for anyone no matter what time of the day. She is always there for us no matter what and would never let any of her grandchildren down.

What question would you really like to answer, and what’s the answer?!

Should mayonnaise be eaten with most meals? I absolutely love mayonnaise and have it with most things. My answer is yes.
