We talk to Katie about her role as an Accounts Semi-Senior at The Accountancy Partnership.

Give an overview of the duties, functions, and responsibilities of your job.

I have my own portfolio of clients consisting of Limited Companies, Sole Traders and Partnerships. My job is to prepare their accounts, corporation tax returns, VAT returns and Self Assessments and answer any questions they have along the way.

What is a typical working day like for you?

After making an obligatory morning coffee, I’ll respond to my client’s emails and queries. Afterwards, I’ll move on to any initial consultation calls I have booked in with new clients to learn about their businesses and figure out our next steps. My lunchtimes always consist of a walk around the docks near the office – getting those 10K steps in!

In the afternoon, I’ll typically focus on preparing accounts, VAT returns, Self Assessments, and focusing on my client’s upcoming deadlines. Every day is different, so they always fly by.

What particular challenges do you regularly encounter?

It can be challenging at times juggling working with studying for my ACCA qualification. You definitely have to manage your time well.

What are some of the biggest challenges faced by your clients?

Keeping up with legislation changes and deadlines. It can be overwhelming at first, as there can be a lot to learn, but that’s where we come in.

How are you able to use your skills to solve problems for them?

I have worked in accounts for 3 years now, and use both my practice experience and accounting knowledge to help clients on a daily basis.

What is your favourite part of the job?

I love when I explain a concept to a client and see them really understand it. It’s so interesting, learning about all of the different industries my clients are in and whereabouts in the world. It really keeps me on my toes.

What do you like most about working for The Accountancy Partnership?

I love being self managed and being the first port of call with my clients. TAP is amazing in that respect, and they’re always organising fun staff socials or putting on free lunches for us. You really feel like a valued member of the team. Everyone is really supportive of each other also.

What skills do you find most useful to do your job?

You definitely have to be organised in this line of work. Being able to manage your time and prioritise tasks is essential as there is always another deadline approaching. You also have to be very empathetic, as every client has different needs.

Where’s your favourite place to visit on days off?

You can usually find me at the beach near my house with my dogs. I have a labradoodle and two whippets who certainly keep me busy. If I’m not studying, I also love trying out new restaurants on the Wirral or in nearby Liverpool. The food is often accompanied by an Aperol spritz of course!

Tell us about your proudest achievement.

I would say my decision to pursue accountancy in the first place. After falling into it, I made the decision to take the leap and abandon the career path I was on, and pursue something I was truly passionate about.

How would your colleagues describe you?

I asked them and they said “Friendly, thoughtful and dedicated”. I’ll take that!

What are you reading/binge watching at the moment?

I am always rewatching Friends for the millionth time (no shame here). I also love learning new things, whether that’s watching a documentary or listening to a new audio book.

Who do you admire, and why?

Definitely my Mum. As an accountant herself, she has always been a role model to me. Her work ethic and professionalism are really inspiring, and she is always there to support me.

What question would you really like to answer, and what’s the answer?!

Q. Cordial then water, or water then cordial?

A. It’s got to be cordial then water for me!
