If you have reached the stage in your business where you could really use the extra help, don’t overlook the world of apprenticeships. Taking on an apprentice will see you helping someone develop their skills and experience. It’s valuable for them, and just as useful for you to ensure the future availability of talent employees.

Reasons to hire an apprentice

Apprentices can bring fresh thinking and new ideas

With an apprentice, you’re getting someone who hasn’t picked up bad habits or become stuck in their ways. Instead, you’ve got a wonderful opportunity to see the industry through their fresh eyes, seeing solutions and new ideas. It’s why businesses benefit from a more diverse workforce. A range of backgrounds and experiences is essential for sparking new ideas, rather than stagnant thinking.

Improves staff retention

Providing you treat your apprentices fairly, you will likely find that they become loyal members of staff who stick around for years. As you’ve taken the time to give them experience and train them up in their role, they are much more likely to stay around and move up the ranks in your company for years to come.

You’ll be taking on someone eager and willing to learn

The great thing about hiring an apprentice is that they’re eager and willing to learn and develop new skills. While you will have to invest the time in training them, having someone who is open to learning new things is an invaluable thing for a business.

There are lots of employees out there who think they already know all there is to know about a job or an industry and are less open to learning new things. With an apprentice, you can build a culture in your business where learning is celebrated and encouraged.

When you shouldn’t hire an apprentice

You’re just looking for a cheap employee

Unfortunately, a common problem with apprenticeships is that some businesses are just looking for a regular member of staff they don’t have to pay as much. While hiring an apprentice is certainly cheaper, it’s important not to take advantage of the situation.

If you commit to taking on an apprentice, you have a responsibility to provide training and useful experience. Don’t be one of those businesses who dumps lots of responsibility on an apprentice without giving them proper training. Both parties end up very disappointed.

Those who do this never take full advantage of all the benefits that apprentices have to offer. Do your research and ensure you have enough time to give your new apprentice so they can learn the ropes, and become a valuable part of your business.
