With younger workers and small business owners claiming higher rates of stress than ever before, it seems like a good time to talk about ways that small business owners and entrepreneurs can limit the stress in their lives.

Talk to a confidante or professional

Sometimes the worst part of a stressful situation is feeling alone and anxious, and bottling up your emotions can be really hard on both your mental and physical health. Even though it sounds too simple to be effective, when you take the time to verbalise your stress, the tension can start to melt away.

Try having a debrief session with a friend, family member or a professional counselor. As soon as you get it off of your chest, you will feel the relief.

Make sure your books are in order

One of the leading causes of stress is money and finances. In your personal life this can be bad enough, but the minute that you are dealing with your company’s accounting, the stakes become a lot higher. Rather than having this panic niggle away at the back of your mind, keeping you awake at night, bite the bullet and dive in.

You will be amazed at how easy cloud based accounting software can make this process, and you will feel so much better once you start.

Turn off your email and mobile

We know that this one can be way easier said than done, but you need to take time away from the demands of your business and go off the grid for at least a few hours every day.

Our parents’ generation didn’t have to deal with the stresses of being connected 24/7, and despite the fact that sometimes it feels like it’s ‘do or die,’ neither should you.

Focus on your health

We tend to neglect our health and wellbeing when we feel busy, but this is the worst thing you can do. When your health suffers, you become even more prone to stress, which causes your health to suffer even more! Take time away from your work to exercise, plan your meals, sleep well, and practice mindfulness.

You will become even more effective in your role, and your stress levels will lower.

Make sure you take breaks

Further to the point above, one of the most important things you can do for your health – and for your productivity – can be to take breaks. Although this can seem incredibly counterintuitive when you are at your busiest, when your step away from your desk for even a few minutes you lighten your mental load, reduce your stress, and increase your overall productivity.
