Small Business Saturday takes place on the busiest shopping day of the year, Saturday 3rd December. The annual event was set up in 2013 to celebrate small businesses and encourage shoppers to use them more often, particularly during the holiday season.
People are starting to turn back towards small businesses, shunning larger firms who have had plenty of bad press such as tax avoidance and directors’ pay scandals. Small Business Saturday aims to revive the community by raising awareness of the value that smaller firms can bring.
It has been backed by multiple business organisations including the Federation of Small Businesses, The Association of Convenience Stores, The National Federation of Retail Newsagents and the Association of City and Town Management. National campaign director, Michelle Ovens says: “It’s such a busy day with people thinking about spending money anyway, that it’s the ideal opportunity to get people to think about where they are spending that money.”
The organisers say that Small Business Saturday is already having a positive effect, with research suggesting that shoppers spent 24% more at small businesses on this dedicated shopping day than last year. 46% of those surveyed said that they had “shopped small” specifically for Small Business Saturday.
Hundreds of events are lined up to take place across the country to celebrate and raise awareness. Ovens says that 80% of local authorities are planning to show support for the campaign and many are planning to offer free parking in town centres.
Small Business Saturday is a great way for small and local businesses to take advantage of free advertising that some may be unable to usually afford. With bus tours, talks, workshops and activities, consumers can get involved and businesses can connect with each other.

Make sure you let your followers know that you’re supporting the Small Business Saturday campaign and how your consumers can take advantage of the day. Use relevant hashtags to join in with the nationwide discussion to spread awareness.
Everyone loves a good freebie. It can be just the thing you need to get people to notice your business or step into your shop and make that first connection.
Network with other businesses
Small Business Saturday isn’t just for the customers. Take the opportunity to reach out to other small businesses who are supporting the campaign. See if you can partner with them and offer a similar deal that compliments rather than competes with your own. You can share advice and promote each other, while making a useful contact you could both benefit from.
