Working from home – or ‘WFH’ as the cool kids on the block like to call it – has lumped itself with quite the tarnished reputation thanks to those who choose to take advantage of professional flexibility.

However, when it comes to those who don’t use their WFH time to binge on Netflix and refresh their emails every half an hour just in case, working from home can actually provide a whole host of advantages for the employer.

As flexible working becomes more commonplace in the modern working world, we wanted to shine the spotlight on some of the main advantages of WFH. We hope this will help foster a more trusting relationship between staff and those employers who would like to implement less traditional approaches in their business.

It’ll save you a pretty penny

Think about it this way – if staff are at home, in their own space, using their own resources then they won’t be in the office using yours.

In other words, letting staff work from home from time to time is a great way to lower your overheads and reduce the amount of office space required, as well as things like supplies, stationary, refreshments, equipment and electricity.

A more productive workforce

When staff are given more professional autonomy and are able to work in ways, times and locations which they feel suit their personal requirements, they are more likely to demonstrate improved efficiency, output and motivation to get the job done.

This comes hand-in-hand with morale, job satisfaction and a subsequent boost in mood and mental wellbeing.

Much happier, healthier staff

Seeing as we dedicate so much of our time to developing our careers, it’s absolutely paramount that happiness and mental health is at the top of the priority list.

There are many, many ways in which employers and business owners can improve wellbeing in the workplace but one of the most effective tactics is being flexible around working hours and offering the opportunity to work from home.

Considering the wellbeing of the workforce in this way will go a long way towards nurturing a body of staff who are happy and content in their roles.

Fewer days off in the diary

We’ve all been there at least once – you could really do with spending the day under your duvet but you’ve already used up all of your annual leave so you pull the infamous ‘sickie’.

Enabling staff to work from the comfort of their own homes when they need a day indoors or they’ve got to wait in for the plumber to come and fix their leaky shower is therefore an effective way to lower the rates of absenteeism.

Lure in the best new industry talent

Last but by no means least, implementing a WFH policy will almost certainly prove to be an effective tactic in attracting and retaining young talent.

Flexible working and increased freedom around where, when and how they work is a real benefit for millennials and Gen Z so if you want your business to reap the rewards of their fresh new skillsets, make working from home occasionally a viable option.
