A survey conducted by Sage UK, service and software provider, revealed that most owners of Small and Medium Enterprise worked during the Christmas holiday. The results of the survey show that 63 percent of business owners worked between Christmas and the New Year. Although a number of companies were closed, 39 percent of business owners worked regardless. The Sage Omnibus report questioned more than 1000 businesses, from a database of over 800,000 members. Out of the 1000 business owners partitioned, only 12 percent of SME owners are resentful of having to work during Christmas.

The results of the survey reveal that five percent of SME owners worked on Christmas Day, while seven percent went in to work on Boxing Day and 10 percent worked on New Year’s Day. Although the research revealed that 10 percent of owners would work over Christmas to plan for the coming year, 62 percent were actually catching up with business duties, like payroll and finance.

A large number of employees were able to take time off over the Christmas period, while the majority of business owners attended the workplace. However, 84 percent of the SME owners that were questioned said that working during the holidays was productive for them. A number of the business owners said that working during the Christmas period enabled them to work productively, without being distracted. The downside for business owners who did work over the festive period was that banks, the main suppliers and IT support were closed.
