A survey published by SMEDiscounts.com reveals that 27 percent of small business owners believe that their company is in a poor state of health. The current uncertainty in the UK economy has increased pressure on small business owners, with a third stating that their business is performing worse than in the previous year.

According to the survey, a lack of funding wasn’t the main cause of problems experienced by the businesses, with only 13 percent citing funding as an issue. Weaker pricing was an issue for concern according to 35 percent of respondents and 38 percent believed that a lower level of turnover was the main factor. A tenth of business owners did admit that not being able to secure funding did have serious implications for the business.

The state of the United Kingdom economy has provoked mixed reactions from small business owners, as 66 percent of SMEs surveyed thought that worse was yet to come. However, the rest of the businesses who were included in the survey, held a positive view on the situation.

The founder of SMEDiscounts, Andries Smit, said that they were aware of difficulties which small businesses were having to face in the UK. He commnted:

“Small businesses are suffering. This is evident from the poor health the respondents to our survey describe. Those who lack a great product or innovative approach are not going to be able to climb out of the rubble left behind by the economic implosion of recent years.”

The advice given by SMEDiscounts is to ensure that all possible measures are taken to cope with future difficulties.
