A recent report has revealed that freelance and remote workers will play a strategic role for Small and Medium Enterprises looking to increase their workforce over the next 12 months. The report also shows that SMEs who are trading overseas are showing greater success than businesses which are concentrated solely in the UK.

The Regus report surveyed more than 2000 SMEs, of which 42 percent are looking to recruit freelance workers in the coming 12 months. Employers who plan to recruit permanent staff are looking at remote working, with 29 percent planning this option. Freelance and remote options are more prominent among overseas traders, with 49 percent opting for freelancers and 39 percent working remotely.

Confidence has reduced among UK business, and the number of businesses reporting an increase in turnover and profits has decreased. The regional director at Regus, Celia Donne said:

“SMEs realise that they must continue investing in growth, so freelance and remote working are becoming increasingly popular solutions to increase headcount while remaining flexible and rapidly scalable. 27% of the employed population in the UK are now deemed to be flexible workers, which illustrates the significant shift that has already taken place in the employment market.”

Overseas traders are reporting higher levels of confidence, in addition to reporting higher increases in profits in comparison to domestic businesses. In conclusion, Donne states that it is possible for small businesses to become established overseas at a low risk, maximising opportunities with a flexible workforce and remote working.
