According to new research from workplace help service, Rungway, British workers are finding work is interrupting their sleep patterns and causing stress. The research revealed that 5.3 million British workers experience sleepless nights due to work issues.
40% said that they have experienced heavy workloads in the past year and have been left feeling burnt out. This then can have negative effects on working practices with employees struggling to concentrate, being more likely to get ill and feeling low.
There seems to be a difference in gender, with 42% of women saying they’ve experienced burnout and work issues compared to 38% of men.
In terms of sleep, age seems to play a role with younger workers more likely to be kept up at night worrying. 28% of 25-34-year-olds said they had trouble sleeping in comparison to 10% of over 55s.
However, in terms of workload, it’s the 35-44-year-olds who have the most to deal with. 57% said that they have dealt with heavy workloads and experienced burnout.
Working conditions and burnout
A similar piece of research from Emolument.com revealed the types of working conditions that can contribute to burnout. They found that those who are more likely to experience burnout earned less than £20k, no degree and worked in certain industries.
The three worst sectors for burnout are healthcare, services and tourism, and construction and real estate. Other stressful sectors include banking, energy and mining, and insurance.
Co-founder and COO of Emolument, Alice Leguay said: “Stigma attached to burnouts is likely to deal such a blow to a top performing professional’s career that they are unlikely to thrive should they recover and return to their teams.”
With stress being one of the top reasons for employee absence, it’s important to look at the causes. Many people are hesitant to talk about stress and mental health for fear of judgement so it’s important that employers are understanding and approachable.
Broader causes of work anxiety
Daniel Sanchez-Grant from Rungway said: “With increasing uncertainty over Brexit and elections we are all getting anxious, and we also have everyday work problems we are worrying about. Unlike external concerns, there are ways we can help ease and overcome common work issues.
“Most simply – talking to someone. No one should suffer in silence, but it can also be hard to reach out and many of us feel we can’t help others. That’s why Rungway was created – to provide people with an easy way to receive help and offer others advice.”
