Decision-making is one of life’s notoriously challenging hurdles. You only have to take the agonising Friday night takeaway picks to appreciate that.

Bickering about spring rolls over stuffed crusts is one thing, but making big decisions about your business is a whole other kettle of (battered) fish. Especially when you’re at the helm, and have nobody else to consult. Here are five things you can do to help make solo decision-making feel a less daunting.

Use past experiences to shape your strategy

Easy enough for us to say, but even from cold-hard experience we know that independent decision-making can struggle under the weight of negative past experiences which have knocked your confidence.

Instead of letting these experiences breed self-doubt, use them as a vehicle for self-analysis and constructive criticism. That way, you can use what went wrong to shape an alternative approach which will hopefully have a more desirable outcome.

Keep a record of these evaluations so you can draw upon them every time you are looking for some guidance on the best way to proceed. Similarly, use what has worked well in the past as a framework to boost confidence and again, provide some invaluable guidance.

Talk it over with somebody who doesn’t care as much as you

There’s nothing wrong with exploring any avenue of advice, so in addition to podcasts, books and articles, maybe chat to someone who can offer an unbiased opinion. Whether that’s a  friend, a family member, your other half, a neighbour, or someone whose experience you trust, a subjective perspective can help you make more well-informed choices.

Weigh up the pros and cons (no surprises here)

Literally write down a list of negatives and positives for each choice on a piece of paper, and then look at all of these with an analytical eye. Hopefully then you should see some sort of clear path forming. It may lead you to a point where you must decide between logic and gut instinct though!

Bolster everything with thorough research

There’s a lot to be said for gut reaction, but follow up with some homework. Any option you decide to explore should be well researched and thoroughly thought through before investing any time or energy into it. Avoid impulse decisions and instead, bolster all of your inklings and instinct with solid facts and figures to support them.

Don’t let your ego stand in the way of support

Last but never least, know when to let your guard down and ask for help. Far too many of us believe that needing some kind of support is a sign of weakness but really, it’s about having the strength to do what’s best for your business.
