Are you thinking of becoming a ‘digital nomad’ and taking your freelancing lifestyle to the next level? More and more freelancers are realising that they can pick up and do their jobs from countries where the cost of living in low and the value for money is high. After all, as a freelancer you can charge your normal rates in British pounds while living in a country with a much weaker currency.

Sound good? You’re not alone.

Dutch freelancing platform recently released the results of their comprehensive study about the 10 best cities for freelancing. They surveyed a total of 117 cities, and specifically looked at 23 factors that are of importance to freelancers.

These factors included:

So, who came out on top?

Prague leads the way for 2018

The Czech capital tops the list for the best cities in the world for freelancers in 2018 – but why is Prague such a desirable place to conduct your business? The study found that it boasts fast internet connections, a low cost of living and low taxes – the three things that make it very attractive for today’s digital nomads.

Prague itself is also a world class tourist destination filled with twisting laneways, majestic castles, plentiful green spaces and an active nightlife and culture scene. Work hard during the week, and take advantage of the cultural and natural attractions during your downtime.

Seven of the ten best cities for freelancers are in Europe

Who else made the top ten?

  1. Prague, Czech Republic
  2. Sevilla, Spain
  3. Lisbon, Portugal
  4. Miami, USA
  5. Bratislava, Slovakia
  6. Berlin, Germany
  7. Vancouver, Canada
  8. Porto, Portugal
  9. Las Palmas, Spain
  10. New Orleans, USA

You can definitely see that freelancers tend to migrate to places with warm weather and easy access to nature – 4 of the 10 are in Spain and Portugal.

And while you might expect to see Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Bali on the list (as they are time tested and beloved freelancer destinations) Hoofdkraan ranks them lower based on cleanliness, safety, a lack of freedom of speech and the lower quality of coffee. That said, these are still great (and cheap!) options for a lot of people.

Don’t forget to stay on top of your accounting

No matter where in the world you head to do your freelancing work, you need to remember to stay on top of your accounting and tax obligations.

It can be challenging when working abroad, as you might end up owing taxes to two different countries. Keep track of everything by utilising a bookkeeping and accounting app.

Of course, we’re pretty partial to our own software, Pandle, but as long as you are diligent and accurate, that’s all that matters.

Bon Voyage!
