So you work from home and are lucky enough to have set aside a home office. Preferably it’s one that’s just used for your business and isn’t littered with kids’ toys, old Christmas decorations and mismatched furniture.
Having your own office is a great place to work from but how do you stop it from being another procrastination spot?
Here are a few ideas to get the best out of your home office:
Build an Ergonomic Workstation
This is arguably the most important part of any office. If you’re going to be spending several hours a day here, you need to make sure it’s comfortable and will not put you at risk of strain or injury while you work.
This means getting a proper chair, a desk with a computer at eye level, keyboard and mouse placed well so you don’t have to strain yourself. Ideally you don’t want to have to lean over or stretch to get things you need on a regular basis. Everything you use regularly should be within reach if possible.
Fill up a Bookcase
Though we are very much in the age of digital downloads when it comes to reading, nothing beats a good book. Whatever industry you work in, it’s always handy to have a few reference books to take a look at once and a while. Reading can help refresh your mind and help you come up with new ideas especially when you’re stuck on something.
Add a Personal Touch
While there’s little good turning your office into a second living room, there’s nothing wrong with putting a personal touch in there. A dull, sterile-looking office will do no good for your mood or creativity. So go on and decorate, add in art, inspirational quotes or plants to add a bit of colour and life to a boring office. Turn it into a space that you don’t dread to spend the day in.
Declutter Your Distractions
Following on from a previous point, it’s great to add in a personal touch to your home office so that it’s comfortable to work in. However, be careful not to make it TOO home-like. It shouldn’t be the type of place you can just sit down and nap or watch TV in.
You want to be able to switch your mind to work-mode when you step into your office and the best way to do that is to try and keep your business and personal lives separate if possible. If you have too many things distracting you, you’ll never get any work done.
You should aim to keep things as minimal as possible so that it’s easy to find things when you need them. You don’t want a client on the phone hearing nothing but rustling paper because your filing system consists of a big pile on the floor.
Declutter and organise your office with business and productivity in mind. Make it an easy place to work in, both mentally and physically.
Have a break system
Making your home office work for you is great but make sure you’re still taking a break from it from time to time.
While some people will struggle to just sit down and work, others might forget to step away. If you’re working at home, you could end up staying in the same place for a long time. Instead you should try to treat it the same as any office space. Step away from the desk, and the office if you can for regular breaks.
If you know your mind is going to wander during these breaks, you’ll have to be stricter with yourself and make a routine of it. If you have a space to work, why not have a space for your breaks? Getting into a routine is so important for people who work from home to maintain productivity.
