All limited companies are required to maintain a register of company directors. This document shows who the company directors are, and includes some personal details to help identify them. Typically this includes:

Where is a Company Directors Register kept?

Privately owned limited companies can choose whether or not they share this information publicly as part of their Companies House record. At a bare minimum, the Company Director Register must be available at their registered address or with an agent. Public limited companies don’t have the option and must share their director’s information.

Who should I include on the register?

Your register should include anyone who has been appointed as a director to the company, even if this is only one person. You should treat it as a separate document to your Register of Members which includes shareholders etc., even though they might contain the same information. There are rules which restrict who can be a company director:

Why do I need to keep a register of directors?

HMRC and Companies House use this information to check tax records for both the company, and the individuals in it. It also helps other people find out more about a company. For instance potential business partners or investors who want to know more about what other interests a director has. It might also form part of their due diligence and decision making process for working with the company.

What if the register changes?

You can (and should!) update the Company Directors Register for your business. If a company director is disqualified for any reason Companies House will add them to the public Register of Disqualified Directors until the disqualification period is over.
