The number of employees in a company will depend on the work available, and how many employees are required to complete the tasks. Employees can be full time, part time, contractors or casual employees, so you can employ the required number of staff for your business.

All employees who are permanent have employment rights, regardless of the hours worked or working pattern. If you hire temporary workers, the Agency Workers Regulations came into force on 1st October 2011, giving agency workers the same entitlements as a permanent member of staff, if they are hired by you for a 12 week period or more.

All employees have to be paid following the National Minimum Wage guidelines, with pay rates varying according to age and whether they are on an apprenticeship scheme. It may be necessary to register with HM Revenue & Customs for a PAYE scheme if you pay employees above the tax threshold. The rates for 2012-13 are £156 a week before paying tax, £675 a month and £8105 a year.

Hiring employees requires regular administration, managing PAYE, pension schemes and employer benefits. There are employment laws to be considered in addition to remaining compliant with HMRC. All employers, no matter how many employees they have will submit employment information to HMRC online. This includes forms when a person is initially employed and when an employee leaves the company. End of Year employer returns have to be submitted and the introduction of Real Time Information is imminent which will change procedures slightly.
