Four top tax experts presented a list of problems, which are a direct result of mistakes attributed to HM Revenue & Customs, to Members of Parliament on the Treasury subcommittee. It is feared that the problems suffered by HMRC will lead to a loss of confidence from the people of United Kingdom. It is thought that since the merger of Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise, HMRC has lost many of its most experienced staff, while providing inadequate training for less experienced members of staff.

The chairman of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Paul Aplin, has reported that his staff face chaos when they have to deal with HMRC, with minor queries which previously took minutes to deal with now taking much longer, months in some cases. A senior executive from HMRC was recently invited by Mr Aplin to spend time at their office to witness first hand the problems. The executive saw that it took 12 minutes just to answer a call, which took a further seven minutes to sort out a basic query.

Small business owners and others that are self employed do not have the time or money to waste making unnecessary phone calls to HMRC, perhaps not receiving the correct answer to queries. Online accounting enables you to submit documents to your small business accountants in real time, leaving them to deal with queries on your behalf. Reputable online accountants are able to deal with HMRC much faster, while obtaining the correct information required to keep your records up to date.

We have just received new tax codes… People earning over £100k still have a basic allowance(ouch – then they will presumably have to pay interest on their tax underpayment due to total incmpetence from HMRC). People earning under the monthly tax free limit are still on emergency codes so HMRC can delay refunding them their allowances.

A final salary pension starts to make sense – as long as their final salary is nil!

HMRC are unaccountable, suffer no recourse, are out of control, abuse their powers – the list of incompetence is endless. They answer to no-one and are the main enemies of enterprise.
