HMRC issued a warning to UK taxpayers about scam websites offering HMRC approved tax avoidance schemes.
According to HMRC, these are websites offering to help people to pay less tax. To make the websites seem credible, they claim that the tax avoidance schemes are HMRC approved.
HMRC have hit back, with the reminder that they never give approval to any tax avoidance scheme, even one where a Scheme Reference Number has been provided.
HMRC publication Spotlights issued the warning, advising taxpayers to be alert to potential tax avoidance. Deals or arrangements seeming to provide a large return with very little risk should be avoided.
Any scheme which HMRC suspect of deliberately avoiding payment of tax is likely to be subject to an investigation.
