The Electricians Tax Safe Plan is now underway, with 50,000 electricians receiving letters from HM Revenue & Customs inviting them to settle any unpaid tax. A warning will be given by HMRC, that any electricians who fail to maximise the opportunity for disclosure could face criminal charges and penalties of up to 100 percent of the tax owed.

According to the head of campaigns for HMRC, Marian Wilson various sources of intelligence are being deployed by HMRC to track down those electricians who may not have paid their full liability to tax. The same methods were implemented during the plumber’s campaign, and this resulted in large numbers of investigations and 10 arrests being made.

An electrician is considered as anyone who maintains, installs or tests electrical equipment, systems or appliances. The campaign is an invite to electricians who owe tax, even if they have made an error when calculating the tax to pay. Electricians who haven’t taken reasonable care or who have deliberately evaded tax are also included. Anyone who wants to be included in the campaign can apply to HMRC between 14th February and 15th May 2012. The people who have come forward will have until 14th August to disclose unpaid tax to HMRC and make payment arrangements. It may be preferable to some electricians that they employ a local accountant who can deal with HMRC on their behalf. Marian Wilson said:

“Our aim is to make it easy for electricians to contact us, make a full disclosure of income and face a reduced penalty.”
