The CF10 form was used by self-employed workers who earned less than the Small Profits Threshold (SPT) to apply for an exemption to Class 2 National Insurance Contributions. These days, NI is handled as part of the Self Assessment process, and sole traders who earn less than the SPT can choose to pay voluntarily.

NI contributions count towards eligibility for some benefits, such as the Employment and Support Allowance, and the state pension.
