Research carried out by Sage UK, software and services provider for business, shows that Peter Jones from the popular TV series Dragon’s Den is the most popular choice of business partner among small companies. Celebrity Peter Jones took 38 percent of the votes in the monthly survey of 500 small businesses. Lord Alan Sugar, Donald Trump and Deborah Meaden were far less popular, with Lord Sugar receiving only 13 percent.
The companies were voting for the celebrity entrepreneur they would most like to work with. Although the television show is immensely popular, with almost 8 million viewers, it would appear that Lord Sugar is not a popular choice for the business world. Only 11 percent of the small businesses surveyed thought that the TV show gave an accurate portrayal of a modern business, and only a fifth of the companies thought the show gave a positive image to the modern business world. The Apprentice is famous for the arguments in the boardroom, and the contestants striving to win at any cost. According to the survey by Sage UK, small businesses are actually looking for interpersonal skills, commitment and integrity in a business colleague.
The CEO of Sage UK, Brendan Flattery said:
“There are few bigger personalities in British business than Lord Sugar, but I’m sure he wouldn’t mind me saying that his style isn’t to everyone’s tastes! Shows like the Apprentice present a deliberately skewed view, but few other programmes have been so successful in getting Britain talking about business, even if it is generally to discuss which of the candidates is the most clueless.”
According to Flattery, there is far more talent among UK entrepreneurs than portrayed on the Apprentice.
