According to the latest report from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and a well-known accountancy firm, the number of permanent appointments has risen for the first time since September 2011. January 2012 saw the figures become positive, increasing to 51.2 from 48.5 in December 2011.

However, the positive news of increased permanent placements was tempered slightly by the reduced number of temporary workers being hired for the second month in a row. The increase in permanent job placements in the UK has been welcomed by the partner and head of business services at the accountancy firm, Bernard Brown who acknowledges the effect of the Eurozone has had on business confidence. He further adds that employers are realising that having the right workforce in place is crucial if small businesses are to provide the kick start to the UK economy which is required.

The Report on Jobs surveys 400 employment and recruitment agencies, with the data showing that demand was highest for construction and engineering employees. Fewer opportunities were available in the hotel and catering sector. The chief executive of the REC, Kevin Green said:

“It is particularly encouraging that six out of eight sectors surveyed show growth in demand, including engineering, IT and office professionals. The Report on Jobs also follows better than expected services data from the Purchasing Managers’ Index, which suggests that confidence is growing amongst consumers as well as businesses.”

Green further states that the jobs market is challenging employers who are struggling to find the skills they are searching for.
