During a regional event in the South East, the minister for trade and investment Lord Green, urged the business community to help the government with regard to its efforts to encourage more businesses into exportation of goods. Among those who could provide support are accountants, banks, law companies and trade networks.
Lord Green was delivering a speech at the National Challenge: Exporting for Growth, an event arranged by UK Trade & Investment. The event was sponsored by PwC and HSBC. The government have pledged to support 100,000 SMEs to venture into the world of exporting by the year 2017. As few UK businesses have ventured into exporting, as highlighted by Adrian White from Biwater Holdings Ltd, it is more important than ever that the business community joins together and offers support to companies wishing to export goods.
According to White, more goods are exported to Ireland than to the whole of Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC). As the BRIC nations are made up of a population of 2.8 billion, the figures prove that UK businesses are not maximising export opportunities. Lord Green further emphasised the points made by White as he stated that trade and export has to change. He said:
“There are world-class businesses out there who could be exporting, and others who could be spreading their wings further. We want to attract an additional 100,000 SMEs to the world of exporting.”
He went on to say that the challenge is national and would require the support of the business community who can advise and encourage SMEs to examine new opportunities.
