January Client of the Month: Aircraft Fuelling Consultancy Services LTD

Now that the candy canes, board games and Christmas films have been stashed away for another year, it’s time to go onwards and upwards with a brand new year.

While you’re dusting off the rest of the mince pies, get to know our latest client of the month, Aircraft Fuelling Consultancy Services LTD (AFCS LTD). We spoke to Andy Chubb to learn more about what the company do.

What’s your role in the company?Aircraft Fueling Consultancy Services

I’m 50% owner of Aircraft Fuelling Consultancy Services Limited, with my wife also owning 50%. I am able to provide the services which AFCS Ltd offers thanks to my experience when working for Air BP.

Tell us about AFCS LTD!

Refuelling aircraft is a high consequences business, and it’s vital that you have the right facilities, equipment, people and procedures to ensure that your operations are safe, reliable and efficient.

AFSC Ltd can provide a wide range of technical, operational, training and inspection services, such as:

  • Technical and operational audits and assessments of existing operations against international standards such as JIG and advice on how to achieve compliance.
  • Training in aviation fuel storage and handling both pre-airfield and on airfield in order to maintain product quality.
  • Training in into-plane fuelling procedures and safety, including misfuelling prevention.
  • Advice in improving operations efficiency and productivity.
  • Incident investigation services including a report and recommendations to prevent recurrence.
  • Trouble shooting a wide range of technical, product quality, health and safety and productivity issues throughout the aviation fuel supply chain right through to delivery into aircraft.

It’s an industry which is gradually fragmenting as the traditional majors pull back into higher margin activities, and smaller operators are increasing their involvement.

Many of these new entrants do not have access to the depth of expertise that the majors used to. AFSC have that knowledge and experience and can provide tailor-made solutions to your issues, even if you don’t fully know what they are at this stage.

How did you get involved with aircraft fuelling?

I have been involved in the business since I joined BP in 1979. I have worked my way up through various operational roles in various countries around the world, eventually becoming the global operations manager.

I was also the chairman of the main industry body which develops the operating standards for joint venture operations, and a trainer for industry inspectors.

It’s an inherently exciting industry to be involved in. Standing on the apron under a 747 or A380 is pretty exciting, and is of course an extremely responsible job as there is very little room for error in either the quality of the fuel delivered or the safety of the refuelling operation.

Having spent over 30 years in the industry with one of the world’s leading suppliers of aviation fuel, we have the knowledge and experience to help continuously improve operations and reduce risk exposure.

What drove you to start the business?

I retired at the age of 57 and thought that going from full time work to full time retirement might be a shock to the system, so the idea of doing some consultancy work was to smooth the transition between the two lifestyles. Not only that but I enjoy what I do and I enjoy the travel required to deliver the services my clients require.

Since starting the business I have travelled extensively in Central and South America, and have visited Namibia, Ghana, Guam, China, France, Luxembourg, and Abu Dhabi.

Why did you choose The Accountancy Partnership?

I was originally with a nationwide chain of accountants which had a local office, but they were continually late in producing and filing my returns and made a number of errors, which would have cost me money had I not spotted them. So I looked to an alternative firm, and I hope they will meet their service promises. (We hope we do too!)
