Four New Year’s Resolutions for Business Owners

New Year’s Resolutions

A new year is a good time to reflect on the previous one and all that your business achieved. If you want to continue your success into 2018, then now’s the time to make plans.

While you might be busy making plans for your company, what are the plans for you as a business owner? We’ve put together some New Year’s resolutions that could help you become a better business owner and get 2018 off to a good start.

Achieve a better work life balance

According to new research from Ultimate Finance, 24% of business owners said they would be missing out on Christmas and working over the festive period.

Running a business can be incredibly stressful. You might have found yourself overworked recently as many business owners do at this time of year.

Take the New Year as a new opportunity to take a step back from your business. You need time off just like anyone else at your company. Take holidays and try to finish at the same time each day. Avoid taking work home with you as you’ll quickly find that your work and personal lives end up blending in and you’ll feel like you’ve had no time to yourself.

Learn to delegate

Following on from the subject of work life balance, delegation is key to freeing up time for yourself. It can be a hard lesson to learn for people who start their businesses with a small team. You get used to doing everything yourself.

However, if you’re hiring all the right people but still stepping in to micromanage, you’re going to have a few staff who are unhappy with what they see as a lack of trust.

Delegating frees up your time, makes your life less stressful and also helps to develop trust and collaboration in the office.

Learn a new skill

It doesn’t even have to be something business related, although that might help. Take the time to learn something new whether it’s learning about new software or a new language.

Learning a new skill can help broaden your mind, provide some relief from the business or help you become a better business owner.

You don’t necessarily have to take a class to learn something new. Regular reading can be a great habit to get into. Bill Gates says that he reads about 50 books a year and advises that people spend at least an hour a day to reading. If you decided to dedicate more time to reading, just think what you could learn with all that new information.

Embrace your role as the face of the company

Many business leaders like to hide behind the company logo. However, people like putting a name to a face and that’s exactly what you are, the face of the company. This could mean getting onto social media, doing interviews, talks or hosting networking events. Getting your name out there can be just as important as getting your company name out there these days.
