While installing solar panels and high-efficiency, eco-friendly equipment may be possible for the big companies with seemingly endless budgets, that doesn’t mean that smaller businesses can’t do their bit. Sometimes it’s the little things that add up and help. So here are some ideas on how your office could go more eco-friendly without breaking the bank.

Recycle

This sounds like one of the more obvious options but a surprising amount of offices don’t do it. Nowadays people are used to recycling in their homes but when it comes to offices, everything often gets chucked into one bin. Make a conscious effort to separate rubbish in the office. Clearly label different bins and make it easy for your workers to recycle without thinking.

Printing

Encourage your staff to print on both sides of paper to cut down on paper waste. You could also put a message in everyone’s email signature encouraging recipients not to print the emails that you send them. If you can, make the move towards a paperless office too.

Travel

Think about starting a cycle-to-work scheme for your employees to encourage them to ditch the car. It’ll be better for their health and wellbeing and better for the planet too.

Alternatively, you could try to organise a carpool scheme to cut down on the amount of cars being driven to the office. This is also a good idea if parking is a nightmare around your building.

Another way to cut down on emissions from travelling to the office is to introduce remote working. If your staff can work from home, then why not let them every so often. They’ll likely be happier and you’ll also cut down emissions.

Switch them off

Save on your electricity bill and help the environment by encouraging people to switch things off when not in use. This goes for computers on standby, printers and photocopiers left on overnight. Use eco-friendly lightbulbs wherever possible or if you’ve got the money, install motion-detection lights so that lights are only in use if someone’s around.

Get a decent coffee machine

If you work in a city, you’re probably used to lines of people coming in clutching a paper cup of coffee in the morning. To avoid this, get a good coffee machine that makes several cups at once. This will save people from boiling the kettle all the time and also work well for people who don’t like instant coffee. You’ll save on rubbish and save your workers some money too. If you can get an energy efficient machine this is even better. If you want to go one step further, buy organic or fair-trade coffee and tea too.
