The last weekend before Christmas has been hit by heavy snow falls, affecting shoppers all over the United Kingdom. As retailers geared up for traditionally the busiest weekend throughout the year, heavy snow falls stopped shoppers reaching their destinations and affected supplies reaching business owners.
Online purchases have been affected as snow brought chaos to the postal system, with many consumers not receiving gifts that they have ordered for Christmas. Businesses who rely on supplies reaching them by mail have run out of materials to enable them to fulfil Christmas orders. Some of the major shopping centres in the UK have been forced to close as a result of the inclement weather conditions, with many stores that have managed to stay open offering huge discounts to attract shoppers.
One chocolatier from North Lincolnshire, Fiona Sciolti, remarked that many of the local markets were cancelled as a result of the adverse weather conditions, and even if the markets managed to open, the markets received very few shoppers. According to The Centre for Economics and Business Research, up to 900 businesses could become bankrupt as the bad weather adds more poor trade on top of a bad year.
