New marketing opportunities by helping athletes taking part in the Olympics

Team 2012 is a new initiative which has been introduced to help raise funds for British sport, while also presenting opportunities for corporate networking for small businesses during the run up to the 2012 Olympics. The cost of corporate entertaining at the top events could exceed £61,000 which is out of reach for a number of small businesses. Sponsorship of the top athletes is expensive, leaving SMEs out in the cold.

Opportunities for marketing during the 2012 Olympics are also restricted, as the organisers of the event have placed bans on certain words for advertising purposes, including London 2012, Olympic, Olympian and bronze, silver and gold. Only the top sponsors and licensees have free access to these words. Sky writing or distribution of leaflets inside a 200 metre parameter of an Olympic venue will receive an instant penalty of £20,000.

Team 2012 has been launched to raise funds for athletes to have access to doctors, physiotherapists, nutritionists, travel, medicine and coaching. This will help British athletes to secure medals while competing at London 2012. At £15,000 the cost is high, but if used to benefit the company could be tax deductible. In return, the company will receive eight tickets to events which will also include corporate hospitality. The Team 2012 logo can also be used on company emails and websites. The company will be presented with 20 invitations to other events, taking place at such venues as House of Lords and the headquarters of British Olympic Association.

In excess of 20 companies have signed up for Team 2012, offering support for British athletes while increasing marketing opportunities.
