According to research from internet ISP Beaming, businesses suffered from an average of three days without internet in 2016. Overall this is thought to have cost £7 billion in lost productivity and overtime.

The research was conducted on over 500 businesses, with a range of connectivity services and internet service providers in order to get an idea of the scale of the problem affecting UK businesses.

In modern business, internet is a vital part of operations. With the popularity of things like cloud based solutions, an internet outage can bring even larger businesses to a complete standstill. It can affect access to important online services, cloud based systems, communications, online marketing and eCommerce.

Connectivity Problems

Over a quarter of businesses had experienced at least one problem with connection which meant that they couldn’t trade or access important online services needed to run the business on a daily basis.

Businesses usually had to wait of around six hours each time before the connection was restored, meaning that many lose a significant part of their trading week waiting for internet. This can end up costing businesses and slowing down projects.

Only a quarter were able to salvage something from their downtime by changing to tasks that didn’t require internet connectivity. 13% switched to alternative connections.

Daily operations grind to a halt at 38% of businesses when the internet goes down. 13% start to lose money immediately and 46% can see negative impacts after four hours without a connection.

Reasons for Downtime

Managing director of Beaming, Sonia Blizzard says: “Internet failures can happen for all sorts of reasons, including malicious attacks, poorly configured routers or simply not using products that are appropriate for business. As businesses grow, it becomes more important to put in place the right capacity, to have the ability to scale quickly and to protect networks from cyber-attacks.

“Any organisation with more than ten internet users should be monitoring their systems for emerging problems and have experts on hand that can help immediately at the first sign of a problem.”

This is an interesting article. My company specialised in ensuring small business from 1 man band upwards get the service they should be receiving and know where to turn when things do go wrong. We also look at their current package and surprisingly many could be getting a better quality of connection for either the same money or less than they currently play right now.
