Most businesses need to create stationery or promotional items at some point, but as a limited company there are some details which you’re legally required to include on the documents your business uses. We explain what information you must provide about your limited company, and where you need to show it.

The information you must display about your limited company partly depends on where it will be shown. Apart from being a legal requirement, including your branding across your business helps customers identify you more easily – which is good news for building up clientele!

You’ll need a sign showing your company name at each site it operates at, unless it’s your own home. For example, the registered company address and any additional work sites should all clearly display signage with the company’s name. The signs must always be visible, including outside of opening hours.

Your company might use stationery or promotional materials which are printed or available digitally. For instance, a website, invoices, business cards, compliment slips, or social media channels. Whichever format you use, your company name must be shown on everything as well as:

  • The company’s registered number (so you won’t be able to print anything until you incorporate the company!)
  • Your registered office address
  • Where your company is registered (England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland)
  • Making it clear that your business is a limited company

For example, every page of your company website must include the place of registration as well as the company registration number. If you only show this information on your homepage and someone arrives at your website by finding one of its pages online, they might miss it. It’s why most websites these days have a ‘site wide footer’ which is the same no matter what page you look at.

It’s also a legal requirement that your website shows your VAT registration number if your company is VAT registered, along with the details of any professional trade or accreditation bodies it belongs to.
