More people are working from home than ever nowadays. It affords flexibility and freedom to work the hours you want. However, the reality is far from plain sailing. The responsibility of running a business from home can take its toll so it’s important to keep an eye on your health, both mental and physical.
Here are a few areas to keep an eye on in order to maintain good health:
One of the downsides to working for yourself is that you work by yourself. While this might be someone’s idea of bliss, it can end up taking its toll on anyone eventually.
Not having someone to chat to during the day can leave you unenthusiastic to start work every morning. Not having a colleague to ask advice can also leave you indecisive or wary to move forward.
Make sure you’re taking time out of running your business to catch up with friends and family or fellow home-workers.
Stress affects everyone but can be a real issue for the self-employed who have the task of managing a business solo. Freelancers and sole traders in particular can experience stress that is difficult to recognise and address because there’s not necessarily anyone around to point out when you need to slow down.
Make sure you’re keeping on top of stress and allowing yourself plenty of breaks. Hiring help or restructuring your day may be in order so that you’re not so overworked.
Find time for yourself
Make sure that you’re finding time for yourself. This means scheduling in regular breaks so that you can work at your best and also have time to relax. Schedule in time for hobbies or fun activities that don’t have anything to do with your day-to-day business duties.
It can be easy to let work take over most of your time if you’re not strict with your working hours. This could mean that it’s difficult to wind down and come back to business with fresh eyes.
Working at your home office all day means that you have the flexibility to include plenty of exercise into your day. The reality is that most people will forget.
Everyone knows the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle so make sure you’re thinking of ways to get up and about during your working day. Maybe you can take the dogs for a walk, go for a run in the local park or take advantage of your flexible working hours by joining a gym. You can end up saving by opting for an off-peak membership that typical employees miss out on.
One of the great things about working from home is having a fridge full of food a few paces away to get you through the day. The problem is that it’s easy to fall into the habit of spending too much time staring into it and grabbing the lots of unhealthy snacks as the day goes on.
The good news is that it’s easier to eat healthier at home because you have more time to cook meals from scratch.
Don’t have the time or will to cook every lunch or dinner? Try batch cooking your lunches for the week. Plan your lunches in advance so that you don’t end up reaching for the quickest and least healthy meal.
